ABOUT DRY ICE

Dry Ice is the common term for carbon dioxide in a solid state. It is so-called because it does not melt into a liquid. Instead, it gradually reverts to its original gas form. This solid-to-gas transition is known as sublimation. Dry Ice is extremely cold at -78.5 degrees celsius. It is a non-toxic, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Dry Ice is a readily available, economical, and versatile product to use.

HOW IS DRY ICE MADE?

Dry ice is made by pressurising and cooling high-purity carbon dioxide gas into a liquid form. The liquid CO₂ is injected into a hydraulic press chamber where the atmospheric pressure converts it to a snow-like consistency.

The CO₂ snow is then compressed into solid blocks or pellets.

Any CO₂ liquid that does not transform into snow is recovered in a CO₂ gas form and recycled into the production process. The density of the compressed CO₂ snow depends on the applied pressure and the pressure time.

The density of a compressed block can reach 1.56g/cm3 as a maximum at a temperature of -78.64°C.

Once compressed into a solid state, Dry Ice will slowly revert to its original gas form. This gives the appearance of a fog emanating from it.

DRY ICE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Polar Ice operates a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility with a production capacity of up to 30 tonnes of dry ice per day across six advanced production lines, incorporating automatic bagging systems, pelletisers, block presses, reformers and gas recovery systems.

Our vertical CO₂ storage tanks provide a combined capacity of 160 tonnes, ensuring consistent and reliable supply.

As a certified food-grade manufacturer accredited to ISO 9001:2015, Polar Ice is the approved dry ice supplier to many of the country’s leading food producers and meat processors.

We manufacture within a controlled clean-room environment to eliminate the risk of physical, chemical or microbial contamination, supported by an in-house quality assurance team dedicated to upholding our rigorous standards.

DRY ICE PRODUCT FORMS

There are different types of dry ice products. It comes in three forms: pellets, blocks, and slicesEach form is designed for specific needs.

DRY ICE PELLETS

High density (1.6g/cm3), cylindrical dry ice pellets with a 9mm diameter, suited to a wide range of uses, from commercial to domestics users.

Dry Ice Pellets are ofter used for shipping, as their smaller size is ideal for pouring in around products.

DRY ICE BLOCKS

High density (1.6g/cm3), rectangular solid blocks of dry ice. Generally used for freeze branding and shipping with envirotainers.

A 10kg dry ice block will last longer than an equal weight of slices or pellets due to reduced surface area

DRY ICE SLICES

High density, long lasting dry ice slices, customised for the airline and pharma industry. Rectangular and square solid pieces of dry ice.

Dry Ice Slices are often used to precondition Cold Caps for chemotherapy treatments.

FOOD GRADE DRICE®

High density (1.6g/cm3), cylindrical 3mm diameter dry ice pellets developed exclusively for dry ice blasting and food processing.

Food Grade Drice® is multi-purpose and is primarily used in clean blasting and industrial food processing.
